But public transport here isn’t always as straightforward as Google Maps makes it look, and where you stay can make a big difference.

So if you are planning a trip to Paphos without a car, here is what I have learned from actually doing it.

Can You Get Around Paphos by Bus?

Yes – and on the main routes, buses can work quite well.

A standard daytime one-way bus ticket costs €2. If you use a standard one-way paper ticket, transfers are not included.

Some connections are particularly straightforward because they run through the main transport hubs.

Tombs of the Kings Bus Station is one of the most useful. It connects with Paphos Harbour, Paphos Airport, Coral Bay and other parts of the city.

Paphos Harbour is another useful hub.

If you are staying close to one of these main connections, using buses can therefore be surprisingly easy.

And for many typical holiday journeys, you really don’t need a car.

You can check current fares and routes on the official Paphos bus website.

But Not Every Bus Stop Is Equally Easy to Find

This is where my experience becomes slightly less straightforward.

Google Maps is useful in Paphos.

But I would not trust it blindly.

I once needed to take a bus from Mesogi, an area inland from central Paphos. I was standing on what is essentially a main road, and according to Google Maps there should have been bus stops nearby.

I could not find a single clearly identifiable one where the map told me they should be.

That doesn’t mean buses don’t run through the area.

It does mean that there can be a big difference between seeing a little bus-stop symbol on your phone and actually standing beside the road trying to work out where you are supposed to wait.

On the main routes and at established hubs such as Tombs of the Kings or Paphos Harbour, things tend to be much easier.

The further you move away from those routes, the more I would check the journey in advance rather than simply relying on Google Maps.

A bus stop shown on a map is not always the same thing as having convenient public transport.

Where You Stay Makes a Difference

This is probably the biggest piece of advice I would give anyone planning to explore Paphos extensively without a car.

Look at your accommodation not only in terms of how beautiful it is, but also in terms of how you actually plan to spend your holiday.

If you want to make lots of independent excursions by bus, staying close to one of the main transport hubs can make life considerably easier.

If you mainly want to relax, spend time at your accommodation and make occasional trips by taxi or bus, being somewhere quieter can work beautifully.

Those are simply two different kinds of holiday.

Paphos Can Be Very Hilly

There is one more thing that is surprisingly easy to overlook when looking at Google Maps.

Elevation.

Once you travel inland from the coast, much of the Paphos region becomes increasingly hilly.

That can make a supposedly short walk to a bus stop considerably more demanding than it appears on your phone – particularly in the warmer months.

One kilometre along the flat seafront is very different from one kilometre uphill.

So if you are planning to rely heavily on buses, I would check not only:

How far is the nearest stop?

What does the walk to it actually look like?

This is particularly useful when comparing accommodation outside the main tourist areas.

What About Sundays, Weekends and Public Holidays?

This is another reason why a little planning helps.

Some routes can be less frequent at weekends, on Sundays or on public holidays, and some services finish earlier than you might expect.

That doesn’t usually cause a problem if you know about it beforehand.

It becomes annoying when you discover it while standing somewhere in the evening wondering how you are going to get home.

So if you are using the bus for a day trip, I would always check the return journey before you leave.

Not just the journey there.

What About Taxis?

Taxis fill a lot of the gaps left by public transport.

They are obviously more expensive than the bus, but you don’t have to use them for every journey.

One of the easiest ways to travel around Paphos without a car is actually to combine different options.

Take the bus when the connection is convenient.

Walk when it makes sense.

Use a taxi when it saves several connections or a long wait.

You do not have to choose between “rental car” and “bus everywhere.”

There is plenty in between.

Is There Uber in Paphos?

Uber is not the app I would plan around here.

Bolt, however, operates in Paphos and offers ride-hailing in the city.

There are also local taxi services and apps such as CabCY.

Having one of these set up on your phone before you need it can make travelling without a car considerably easier.

You can find current information on the Bolt Paphos page.

Getting From Paphos Airport Without a Car

Arriving at Paphos Airport without hiring a car is quite straightforward.

The 612 bus connects Paphos Airport directly with Tombs of the Kings Bus Station, making it particularly useful if you are staying around the main tourist area.

Alternatively, you can take a taxi.

So I certainly would not rent a car purely because you are worried about getting from the airport to Paphos.

The more important question is what you want to do once you are there.

Can You See the Main Sights Without a Car?

<div Archaeological Park and Tombs of the Kings fit naturally into a car-free stay.

Coral Bay is also connected by bus from Tombs of the Kings.

It becomes more complicated when you want to explore the more remote parts of the Paphos region.

Akamas, small villages, isolated beaches and some stretches of coastline give you much more freedom if you have your own car.

That does not mean you cannot visit them without one.

You might take a taxi, join an excursion or hire a car for just one or two days
