Others were once family pets.

Und dann gibt es da noch die Welpen.

Sometimes entire litters need somewhere to go.

For years, rescue organisations in Cyprus worked under enormous time pressure because unclaimed dogs could have only a very short period in the pound system before their future became uncertain.

Recent changes to Cyprus' dog legislation have strengthened the protection of unclaimed stray dogs and extended that period.

That is an important improvement.

But it doesn't change the reason rescue organisations are under so much pressure in the first place.

The Real Problem Starts Earlier

For me, this is the most important part of the discussion.

The question isn't what should happen to a dog once it has already become homeless.

The bigger question is:

Why do so many dogs continue to become homeless in the first place?

Cyprus already has laws intended to protect animals.
