A dog's breed or mix can give you clues about potential size, energy levels and behavioural tendencies.

Does the breed commonly have a strong prey drive? Was it bred to herd? Guard? Retrieve? Work independently?

Those characteristics can matter enormously when choosing a dog.

But breed is not personality.

Two dogs of exactly the same breed can have very different temperaments.

And with mixed-breed rescue puppies, breed identification itself isn't always straightforward.

That's why observing the individual dog is so important.

Who is confident?

Who hangs back and watches first?

Who constantly seeks human contact?

Who is first travel to a foster family in Germany, for example, where potential adopters can meet them without immediately committing to an adoption.

This isn't possible for every dog or every organisation, but it's worth asking.

For international adoptions, there are also legal requirements concerning age, vaccinations, documentation and travel.

Puppies cannot simply be
