They explore the garden, greet us with wagging tails and seem ready for their new life almost immediately.<\/p>\n<p>Others <a href=\"\/de\/rescue-dog-hiding-frankie-story\/\">need more time<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>And then there was Hooper.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/section>\n\n<section class=\"pyr-chapter pyr-chapter--soft\">\n<header class=\"pyr-chapter-header\"><h2>Hooper\u2019s Rescue Story Started in a Field<\/h2><\/header>\n<div class=\"pyr-read\">\n<p>Hooper and his brother Henry were found abandoned in a field in Cyprus.<\/p>\n<p>Being rescued should have meant that the worst part of his story was over.<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, it wasn\u2019t.<\/p>\n<p>While Hooper was in a shelter, he was attacked by another dog and very nearly lost his life.<\/p>\n<p>He survived.<\/p>\n<p>But when he came to stay with me afterwards, it quickly became obvious just how desperately he needed to feel safe.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<figure class=\"pyr-photo-single\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/puppyyogaretreats.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/IMG_2105-scaled-e1787508280103.jpg\" alt=\"Rescue puppies Hooper with a large injury on his neck resting with his carer\" title=\"\"><\/figure>\n<\/section>\n\n<section class=\"pyr-chapter\">\n<header class=\"pyr-chapter-header\"><h2>His First Week With Me: He Wouldn\u2019t Let Me Out of His Sight<\/h2><\/header>\n<div class=\"pyr-read\">\n<p>During that first week, Hooper became incredibly attached to me.<\/p>\n<p>He followed me everywhere.<\/p>\n<p>And I really mean everywhere.<\/p>\n<p>At night, I couldn\u2019t even go to the bathroom without him following me. So Balu walked, and I carried Hooper.<\/p>\n<p>For those first days, much of his world happened from my arms.<\/p>\n<p>I didn\u2019t expect him to suddenly become confident or independent. He had already experienced more uncertainty than any puppy should.<\/p>\n<p>What he seemed to need most was actually very simple.<\/p>\n<p>Someone who stayed.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n\n<section class=\"pyr-chapter pyr-chapter--cream\">\n<header class=\"pyr-chapter-header\"><h2>How Do You Gain a Rescue Dog\u2019s Trust?<\/h2><\/header>\n<div class=\"pyr-read\">\n<p>People often ask how long it takes a rescue dog to trust you, but after so many foster puppies, I don\u2019t think trust follows a timetable.<\/p>\n<p>You cannot look at a calendar and decide that after three days, three weeks or three months a rescue dog should feel safe.<\/p>\n<p>Dogs are individuals.<\/p>\n<p>Some of our puppies greet us with a wagging tail from day one. Others need time before they are comfortable with a walk, a new person or an unfamiliar situation.<\/p>\n<p>And trust itself can look completely different from one dog to another.<\/p>\n<p>With Hooper, attachment came incredibly quickly.<\/p>\n<p>Confidence took longer.<\/p>\n<p>The most important thing was not forcing him to become the dog I wanted him to be. It was giving him the chance to discover that nothing bad was going to happen when he relaxed.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n\n<section class=\"pyr-mission\">\n<header class=\"pyr-chapter-header\"><h2>Slowly, Hooper\u2019s World Became Bigger<\/h2><\/header>\n<div class=\"pyr-mission-copy\">\n<p>Little by little, Hooper started to settle.<\/p>\n<p>His world no longer consisted only of making sure I was still there.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"pyr-mission-rhythm\">\n<p>He could explore.<\/p>\n<p>He could interact.<\/p>\n<p>He could meet new people.<\/p>\n<p>And he could simply be a puppy.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"pyr-mission-copy\">\n<p>This is one of the things I love about <a href=\"\/de\/how-to-foster-a-dog\/\">fostering rescue puppies<\/a> at our <a href=\"\/de\/uber-unser-retreat\/\">Puppy Yoga Retreat iauf Zypern<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The puppies are not suddenly dropped into a completely unfamiliar family environment and expected to understand everything. During their time with us, everyday life gradually becomes bigger.<\/p>\n<p>They meet our team and our guests. They experience new voices, new smells and different people. They play, rest, go on little adventures and sometimes join our <a href=\"\/de\/puppy-yoga\/\">puppy yoga sessions<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>For many of them, it is an opportunity to learn something very important:<\/p>\n<p><strong>People can be safe.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<figure class=\"pyr-mission-photo\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/puppyyogaretreats.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/IMG_2151-scaled.jpeg\" alt=\"Hooper confidently meeting a guest during Puppy Yoga Retreat in Cyprus\" title=\"\"><\/figure>\n<\/section>\n\n<section class=\"pyr-chapter pyr-chapter--soft\">\n<header class=\"pyr-chapter-header\"><h2>The Rescue Dog You Meet Today May Not Be the Dog You Meet in a Few Weeks<\/h2><\/header>\n<div class=\"pyr-read\">\n<p>This is something I wish more people knew about rescue dogs.<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes visitors meet our puppies and are genuinely surprised.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cThese are <a href=\"\/de\/ethical-puppy-yoga-rescue-puppies\/\">Rettungswelpen<\/a>?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>They expect frightened dogs hiding in corners.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, they see puppies playing, climbing onto laps, stealing yoga straps and falling asleep next to people they only met an hour earlier.<\/p>\n<p>The image many people have of a rescue dog isn\u2019t necessarily completely wrong.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s simply incomplete.<\/p>\n<p>A dog can have experienced fear and still become confident.<\/p>\n<p>A dog can have a difficult beginning and still love people.<\/p>\n<p>And a puppy who once became upset because a shower curtain separated him from the person he trusted can learn that people sometimes disappear from sight \u2013 and come back again.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n\n<section class=\"pyr-chapter\">\n<header class=\"pyr-chapter-header\"><h2>Then Hooper Had to Start All Over Again<\/h2><\/header>\n<div class=\"pyr-read\">\n<p>Eventually, Hooper found his new family.<\/p>\n<p>It was everything we wanted for him.<\/p>\n<p>But adoption does not magically erase the adjustment process.<\/p>\n<p>A new home means new people, new smells, a new routine and another completely unfamiliar environment.<\/p>\n<p>During his first few days with his new family, Hooper developed severe diarrhoea.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, when you have been waiting for your rescue dog to arrive, that isn\u2019t quite how you imagine the happy ending.<\/p>\n<p>But Hooper settled in.<\/p>\n<p>The diarrhoea passed, his new surroundings became familiar, and once again he learned that he was safe.<\/p>\n<p>I think this part of rescue stories is important too.<\/p>\n<p>We often see the adoption photo and think:<\/p>\n<p><strong>He made it. The story is over.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>But for the dog, arriving at a forever home is another beginning.<\/p>\n<p>They still have to learn:<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"pyr-rhythm\">\n<p>This is my bed.<\/p>\n<p>These are my people.<\/p>\n<p>This is my routine.<\/p>\n<p>This is home.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<figure class=\"pyr-photo-single\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"HIER-BILD-06-HOOPER-IN-SEINEM-NEUEN-ZUHAUSE-EINF\u00dcGEN\" alt=\"Hooper settled with his new family in his forever home\" title=\"\"><\/figure>\n<\/section>\n\n<section class=\"pyr-chapter pyr-chapter--cream\">\n<header class=\"pyr-chapter-header\"><h2>So, How Long Does It Take a Rescue Dog to Trust You?<\/h2><\/header>\n<div class=\"pyr-read\">\n<p>There is no single answer.<\/p>\n<p>It can take days, weeks or much longer. And even when a rescue dog trusts you, there may still be situations that frighten them or changes they need time to process.<\/p>\n<p>Hooper trusted me enough to follow me into the bathroom almost immediately.<\/p>\n<p>But feeling secure enough not to need me within sight every second was another step.<\/p>\n<p>Then came meeting other people.<\/p>\n<p>New experiences.<\/p>\n<p>And eventually another huge leap of trust: moving into his permanent home.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<blockquote class=\"pyr-quote\"><p>Trust wasn\u2019t one moment.<br>It happened in layers.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/section>\n\n<section class=\"pyr-chapter pyr-chapter--soft\">\n<header class=\"pyr-chapter-header\"><h2>What Hooper Taught Me About Rescue Dogs<\/h2><\/header>\n<div class=\"pyr-read\">\n<p>After more than 50 foster puppies, I have learned not to decide too quickly who a rescue dog is.<\/p>\n<p>The scared dog you meet today may not be the dog you meet a month from now.<\/p>\n<p>The puppy who doesn\u2019t want to walk may one day race ahead of you.<\/p>\n<p>The dog who watches every movement you make may eventually fall asleep without checking where you are.<\/p>\n<p>And the puppy who once couldn\u2019t cope with a shower curtain between us eventually learned that he didn\u2019t need me beside him anymore.<\/p>\n<p>He had his own family.<\/p>\n<p>And that was the whole point.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<figure class=\"pyr-photo-single\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/puppyyogaretreats.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/IMG_2085-2-scaled.jpeg\" alt=\"Happy rescue dog Hooper after learning to trust other people again during puppy yoga class\" title=\"\"><\/figure>\n<\/section>\n\n<section class=\"pyr-final-cta\">\n<h2>Want to Meet Our Current Rescue Puppies?<\/h2>\n<div class=\"pyr-final-cta-copy\">\n<p>The puppies at our Puppy Yoga Retreat in Cyprus are foster dogs looking for their next chapter.
