class=\"pyr-chapter\">\n<header class=\"pyr-chapter-header\">\n<h2>Why Is My Rescue Dog Hiding?<\/h2>\n<\/header>\n<div class=\"pyr-read\">\n<p>When a rescue dog keeps hiding, it can be tempting to worry that something is wrong.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe they don\u2019t like you.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe they will always be fearful.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe you are doing something wrong.<\/p>\n<p>But sometimes hiding is simply the safest option a dog knows.<\/p>\n<p>With Frankie, we didn\u2019t try to force a dramatic transformation.<\/p>\n<p>He was allowed to observe.<\/p>\n<p>He could watch the other puppies interact with us.<\/p>\n<p>He could see Bennie becoming more confident.<\/p>\n<p>He could see Lilly slowly finding her feet.<\/p>\n<p>And meanwhile, we kept being there.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n<section class=\"pyr-mission\">\n<header class=\"pyr-chapter-header\">\n<h2>Four Weeks Can Feel Like a Long Time<\/h2>\n<\/header>\n<div class=\"pyr-mission-copy\">\n<p>When you are waiting for a frightened dog to trust you, four weeks can feel incredibly long.<\/p>\n<p>Especially when other puppies around them seem to progress much faster.<\/p>\n<p>There were no huge breakthroughs with Frankie in the beginning.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"pyr-mission-rhythm\">\n<p>No sudden transformation.<\/p>\n<p>No moment where everything changed overnight.<\/p>\n<p>And then, after around four weeks, something finally did.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"pyr-mission-copy\">\n<p>Frankie started to open up.<\/p>\n<p>He began greeting us differently.<\/p>\n<p>And eventually came one of those tiny moments that means much more when you know how long it took to get there:<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<blockquote class=\"pyr-quote\">\n<p>A wagging tail.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<div class=\"pyr-mission-copy\">\n<p>For many puppies, that would have been completely ordinary.<\/p>\n<p>For Frankie, it wasn\u2019t.<\/p>\n<p>After weeks of keeping himself protected and watching the world from a distance, he was beginning to show us that he felt safe.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<figure class=\"pyr-mission-photo\">\n<img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Frankie taught me something I have seen many times since.<\/p>\n<p>You cannot predict how quickly a rescue dog will settle simply by looking at their background.<\/p>\n<p>Even siblings can respond completely differently.<\/p>\n<p>One may explore immediately.<\/p>\n<p>Another may be afraid of walking.<\/p>\n<p>Another may spend weeks keeping their distance.<\/p>\n<p>That does not mean one dog is doing better than another.<\/p>\n<p>It simply means they need different things and different amounts of time.<\/p>\n<p>Dogs do not know that they are supposed to feel comfortable after a certain number of days or confident after a certain number of weeks.<\/p>\n<p><strong>They get there when they get there.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n<section class=\"pyr-chapter pyr-chapter--soft\">\n<header class=\"pyr-chapter-header\">\n<h2>You Cannot Judge a Rescue Dog by the First Few Days<\/h2>\n<\/header>\n<div class=\"pyr-read\">\n<p>Had someone met Frankie during his first days in the shelter, they might have seen only a frightened puppy hiding in a little house.<\/p>\n<p>Had they met him during his first days with us, they might still have wondered whether he would ever become confident around people.<\/p>\n<p>Four weeks later, we were seeing another side of him.<\/p>\n<p>That side had probably always been there.<\/p>\n<p>He simply needed enough safety to show it.<\/p>\n<p>This is one of the things I love most about <a href=\"\/de\/how-to-foster-a-dog\/\">fostering rescue puppies<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>You get to watch the dog underneath the fear slowly appear.<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes that happens almost immediately.<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes it takes weeks.<\/p>\n<p>And sometimes the biggest breakthrough is nothing more dramatic than a tail finally beginning to wag.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<blockquote class=\"pyr-quote\">\n<p>The dog you meet in the first few days may only be a tiny glimpse of the dog they can become once they finally feel safe.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/section>\n<section class=\"pyr-chapter\">\n<header class=\"pyr-chapter-header\">\n<h2>Frankie\u2019s New Life in Germany<\/h2>\n<\/header>\n<div class=\"pyr-read\">\n<p>Eventually, Frankie was adopted and moved to his new family in Germany.<\/p>\n<p>Soon afterwards, we received a video.<\/p>\n<p>Frankie was lying happily on the sofa next to his new brother \u2014 a dog who had once been fearful too.<\/p>\n<p>They looked completely comfortable together.<\/p>\n<p>Then another video arrived.<\/p>\n<p>This time Frankie was playing freely and enthusiastically with his new owner.<\/p>\n<p>Watching those videos was special.<\/p>\n<p>The puppy who had once spent most of his time hiding inside a little shelter house was now relaxing on a sofa, playing, bonding and enjoying life with his family.<\/p>\n<p>That is why I am so careful not to judge a rescue dog by their first few days.<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes the dog you first meet is simply the dog who is still waiting to feel safe enough to show you who they really ready first.<\/p>\n<p>Lilly followed.<\/p>\n<p>Frankie needed four weeks.<\/p>\n<p>None of them was wrong.<\/p>\n<p>They simply had their own timeline.<\/p>\n<p>The dog you meet in the first few days personalities, histories and pace.<\/p>\n<p>Some walk straight up to our guests.<\/p>\n<p>Some prefer to watch first.<\/p>\n<p>And occasionally, like Frankie, one needs much more time before deciding that people can be trusted.<\/p>\n<p>During their time with us, they experience everyday life, different people, gentle interaction and the freedom to approach when they are ready.<\/p>\n<p>For our guests, that means something special too.<\/p>\n<p>You do not only meet a rescue puppy for a few minutes.<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes you get to watch them change.<\/p>\n<p
