No single incident we could point to and say: <em>That was it.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>But something had changed.<\/p>\n<p>The puppy who had happily explored the world with us suddenly became so frightened of going outside that the sight of her leash alone could make her pee herself.<\/p>\n<p>And we found ourselves asking the same question many dog owners ask when behaviour changes unexpectedly:<\/p>\n<p><strong>What happened?<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n<section class=\"pyr-chapter pyr-chapter--soft\">\n<header class=\"pyr-chapter-header\">\n<h2>Amber and Sophie Arrived at the Shelter as Tiny Puppies<\/h2>\n<\/header>\n<div class=\"pyr-read\">\n<p>Amber came into the shelter together with her sister Sophie when they were only a few days old.<\/p>\n<p>As they grew, their personalities became very different.<\/p>\n<p>Sophie was the more extroverted sister.<\/p>\n<p>Amber was more cautious and liked to observe before deciding whether something was safe.<\/p>\n<p>But both enjoyed going for walks.<\/p>\n<p>That is why Amber\u2019s sudden change surprised us so much.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"pyr-photo-pair\">\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Amber and her sister Sophie as rescue puppies in the shelter\" src=\"https:\/\/puppyyogaretreats.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/IMG_7469-1.jpg\" title=\"\"><\/figure>\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Amber during her early days in foster care in Cyprus\" src=\"https:\/\/puppyyogaretreats.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/IMG_9184-scaled.jpeg\" title=\"\"><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n<section class=\"pyr-chapter\">\n<header class=\"pyr-chapter-header\">\n<h2>Suddenly, Amber Was Scared of Her Leash<\/h2>\n<\/header>\n<div class=\"pyr-read\">\n<p>At some point, walking stopped being something Amber enjoyed.<\/p>\n<p>When she saw the leash, she sometimes peed herself.<\/p>\n<p>And once we were outside the gate of the retreat, she did not want to move away from it.<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes not even a metre.<\/p>\n<p>The strange thing was that this was not a puppy who had always been afraid of walking.<\/p>\n<p>She had done it before.<\/p>\n<p>She had enjoyed it before.<\/p>\n<p>Now she couldn\u2019t.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n<section class=\"pyr-chapter pyr-chapter--cream\">\n<header class=\"pyr-chapter-header\">\n<h2>Had We Done Something Wrong?<\/h2>\n<\/header>\n<div class=\"pyr-read\">\n<p>This was the question that stayed with us.<\/p>\n<p>Had we missed something that frightened her?<\/p>\n<p>Had we pushed her too far without realizing it?<\/p>\n<p>Around the same time, there were also changes within the group of dogs at the retreat. Some puppies left for their new homes and others arrived.<\/p>\n<p>Could that have played a role?<\/p>\n<p>Maybe.<\/p>\n<p>But we simply don\u2019t know.<\/p>\n<p>So instead of inventing an explanation, we focused on the part we could influence:<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<blockquote class=\"pyr-quote\"><p>Helping Amber <a href=\"\/de\/how-long-rescue-dog-trust-you\/\">feel safe again<\/a>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<figure class=\"pyr-photo-single\">\n<img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Amber during the period when she became frightened of going for walks\" src=\"https:\/\/puppyyogaretreats.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/IMG_8356-scaled.jpeg\" title=\"\">\n<\/figure>\n<\/section>\n<section class=\"pyr-mission\">\n<header class=\"pyr-chapter-header\">\n<h2>Helping Amber Take the First Steps<\/h2>\n<\/header>\n<div class=\"pyr-mission-copy\">\n<p>We started very small.<\/p>\n<p>Instead of expecting her to walk away from the retreat, we carried her around 100 metres from the house.<\/p>\n<p>Then we put her down.<\/p>\n<p>Amber was happy to walk back.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"pyr-mission-rhythm\">\n<p>Going away felt frightening.<\/p>\n<p>Going home felt safe.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"pyr-mission-copy\">\n<p>So we repeated the same exercise every day.<\/p>\n<p>We carried her away.<\/p>\n<p>She walked back.<\/p>\n<p>And we rewarded her.<\/p>\n<p>This was not a magic method or something I would claim works for every <a href=\"\/de\/rescue-dog-hiding-frankie-story\/\">fearful<\/a> dog.<\/p>\n<p>It was simply what seemed manageable for Amber.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<figure class=\"pyr-mission-photo\">\n<img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Amber rebuilding confidence during daily walking practice\" class=\"pyr-chapter-header\">\n<h2>For Days, It Felt Like Nothing Was Changing<\/h2>\n<\/header>\n<div class=\"pyr-read\">\n<p>The first few days were difficult because it looked as though we were barely making progress.<\/p>\n<p>Amber still did not want to leave the gate voluntarily.<\/p>\n<p>But we continued.<\/p>\n<p>Then came her final evening at the retreat.<\/p>\n<p>The next day, she was due to leave for her new family.<\/p>\n<p>We went outside once again.<\/p>\n<p>Amber walked through the gate.<\/p>\n<p>And this time, she kept going.<\/p>\n<p>Only a few metres.<\/p>\n<p>But she had chosen those metres herself.<\/p>\n<p>For another dog, they would have meant nothing.<\/p>\n<p><strong>For Amber, they were huge.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<blockquote class=\"pyr-quote\"><p>Sometimes the biggest progress looks very small from the outside.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/section>\n<section class=\"pyr-chapter\">\n<header class=\"pyr-chapter-header\">\n<h2>Then Came the Video From Her New Family<\/h2>\n<\/header>\n<div class=\"pyr-read\">\n<p>Shortly afterwards, Amber arrived at her new home.<\/p>\n<p>Considering how difficult walking had become for her, we naturally wondered how she would cope with yet another major change.<\/p>\n<p>Then her new family sent us the first video.<\/p>\n<p>Amber was running happily through the garden with a toy.<\/p>\n<p>Her tail was wagging.<\/p>\n<p>She looked relaxed and playful.<\/p>\n<p>We were amazed.<\/p>\n<p>Only days earlier, she had struggled to move a few metres away from our gate.<\/p>\n<p>Now she was racing around a completely new garden as if she belonged there.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"pyr-photo-pair\">\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Amber happily settling into her new home after adoption\" pyr-chapter--cream\">\n<header class=\"pyr-chapter-header\">\n<h2>Rescue Dog Progress Is Not Always Linear<\/h2>\n<\/header>\n<div class=\"pyr-read\">\n<p>Amber\u2019s story taught me something important.<\/p>\n<p>A dog can become more confident and then suddenly seem to go backwards.<\/p>\n<p>That does not necessarily mean everything that came before has been lost.<\/p>\n<p>And it does not automatically mean somebody has done something wrong.<\/p>\n<p>With Amber, we never found one clear reason for the change.<\/p>\n<p>We simply worked with the dog in front of us rather than the dog we thought she should already be.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n<section class=\"pyr-chapter pyr-chapter--soft\">\n<header class=\"pyr-chapter-header\">\n<h2>Why Is My Dog Suddenly Scared of Walks?<\/h2>\n<\/header>\n<div class=\"pyr-read\">\n<p>There can be many reasons why a dog suddenly becomes afraid of walking.<\/p>\n<p>A frightening experience, changes in the environment, unfamiliar sounds, physical discomfort or changes within the dog\u2019s social surroundings can all potentially affect behaviour.<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes the exact reason remains unclear.<\/p>\n<p>If a dog suddenly shows a significant behavioural change, especially without an obvious explanation, it is also sensible to rule out pain or another medical cause with a veterinarian.<\/p>\n<p>What Amber showed me, though, is that you do not always need to understand exactly why a dog has taken a step backwards before you can help them take the next step forward.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n<section class=\"pyr-chapter\">\n<header class=\"pyr-chapter-header\">\n<h2>What Amber Taught Me<\/h2>\n<\/header>\n<div class=\"pyr-read\">\n<p>Amber was always the more cautious sister.<\/p>\n<p>But cautious did not mean incapable.<\/p>\n<p>Fearful did not mean permanently afraid.<\/p>\n<p>For days, we felt as though we were getting nowhere.<\/p>\n<p>Then she walked a few metres.<\/p>\n<p>And only a short time later, she was happily running around her new garden with a toy.<\/p>\n<p>That is one of the things I love most about <a href=\"\/de\/how-to-foster-a-dog\/\">fostering rescue puppies<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The dog you see in one difficult moment is not necessarily the dog they will always be.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<blockquote class=\"pyr-quote\">\n<p>Sometimes a few metres through a gate
