What Happens to Puppy Yoga Puppies When They Grow Up?
From a Cardboard Box to a Forever Home – The Story Behind Every Puppy You Meet
“Aren’t you going to miss them?”
It’s a question I hear almost every week.
Usually, it comes at the very end of a Puppy Yoga session.
The yoga mats have been rolled away. The puppies, exhausted from an hour of chasing each other, stealing socks and falling asleep in unexpected places, are scattered around the room.
One is curled up on a volunteer’s lap. Another has claimed the corner of a yoga mat as the perfect place for an afternoon nap. Someone is taking one last photo before leaving.
Then a guest looks at the puppies and asks:
“Aren’t you going to miss them when they leave?”
The honest answer is yes.
Of course we miss them.
We know their personalities. We know who steals the socks, who needs extra reassurance and who always finds the softest place in the room to sleep.
We care for them when they are frightened, celebrate every small step they make and watch them slowly become confident enough to trust the world around them.
Letting them go is never easy.
But keeping them was never the goal.
Every puppy who comes to us is waiting for something much bigger than another yoga class or another afternoon in our garden.
They are waiting for a family of their own.
And once guests understand that, another question usually follows.
What Happens to the Puppies When They Grow Up?
That is the question behind everything we do.
The puppies our guests meet are not raised for Puppy Yoga, and they do not stay with us permanently.
They come to us because they need a safe place to live while they recover, learn to trust people and prepare for life in a real home.
Some arrive after being abandoned. Others come from overcrowded shelters or difficult situations in which they received very little care or human contact.
For a while, they become part of our daily lives.
They sleep in our home, play in our garden and meet guests during Puppy Yoga, Coffee, Cake & Cuddles and quiet afternoons at the retreat.
Then, when the right family is found, they leave us.
They may travel to Germany, Austria, the United Kingdom or another loving home elsewhere in Europe.
And although saying goodbye hurts, it is also the moment we have been working towards from the very beginning.
Because behind every puppy sleeping peacefully on a yoga mat is a story that started long before they arrived at our retreat.
And one that, hopefully, ends many years later with a dog asleep on a family sofa, safe and loved.
This is that story.
The Puppies You Meet Were Never Meant to Be Here
When people imagine Puppy Yoga, they often picture puppies that have been bred especially for the classes.
It’s an understandable assumption.
After all, that’s how many businesses around the world operate.
But that’s not our story.

Not a single puppy you meet at Puppy Yoga Retreat Cyprus was brought into the world for entertainment.
Every single one arrived because something had already gone terribly wrong.
Some were abandoned beside country roads.
Others were born in overcrowded shelters that simply didn’t have enough space.
Some were found without their mother.
Others survived because someone happened to stop their car at exactly the right moment.
Most of them arrived frightened.
Some had never slept inside a house.
Many had never experienced gentle human touch.
And almost all of them had already learned one heartbreaking lesson far too early:
Life wasn’t always kind.
A Reality Most Visitors Never See
Cyprus is famous for turquoise water, white beaches and more than 300 days of sunshine every year.
It’s easy to fall in love with the island.
Many people do.
What most tourists never realise, however, is that Cyprus is also facing one of Europe’s biggest stray animal problems.
Every year, thousands of dogs are abandoned.
Some are unwanted hunting dogs.
Some are the result of accidental litters.
Others are left behind when owners move away or simply decide they no longer want the responsibility.

Rescue organisations work tirelessly to save as many animals as possible.
But shelters are often full.
Resources are limited.
And puppies grow quickly.
For a young puppy, the first weeks of life are incredibly important. They are the weeks during which they learn whether the world is safe, whether people can be trusted and how to cope with new situations.
Growing up in a crowded shelter, surrounded by constant barking and limited human interaction, is very different from growing up in a loving home.
That early experience can shape the rest of a dog’s life.
That’s where our story begins.
More Than a Foster Home
When a new puppy arrives at our retreat, we don’t think of them as the next Puppy Yoga star.
We think about something much simpler.
“What does this little one need today?”
Sometimes, the answer is food.
Sometimes, it’s sleep.
Sometimes, it’s medical treatment.
Sometimes, it’s simply space.
Many puppies spend their first hours doing almost nothing.
They eat.
They drink.
Then they fall asleep.
Deeply.
Safely.
For what may be the first time in their lives.

There is no pressure.
No timetable.
No expectation.
The puppies don’t have a schedule.
We do.
They are allowed to recover at their own pace.
Only when they begin to feel safe does the real transformation start.
Learning to Trust Again
One of the most beautiful things about rescue puppies is that they forgive far more quickly than humans often do.
A puppy that arrived trembling behind a chair on Monday may be confidently chasing butterflies by Friday.
Another who refused to be touched might soon fall asleep with their head resting on someone’s foot.
Trust isn’t something we teach.
It’s something the puppies discover for themselves.
Little by little.
Guest by guest.
Cuddle by cuddle.
Every calm interaction tells them the same thing:
“People can be kind.”
That lesson is impossible to measure.
But it may be one of the most important things a rescue puppy ever learns.
Why We Don’t See Ourselves as a Puppy Yoga Business
This often surprises people.
If you ask us what we do, “Puppy Yoga” isn’t actually the first answer.
We rescue puppies.
We foster puppies.
We prepare puppies for family life.
Puppy Yoga is simply one part of that journey.
An important part—but still only one chapter.
The classes give our puppies something incredibly valuable: safe, positive experiences with new people.
Different voices.
Different ages.
Different smells.
Different personalities.
All in a calm environment where they are free to explore, play, sleep or simply ignore everyone if they prefer.
Nothing is forced.
Nothing is rehearsed.
The puppies don’t perform.
They just live their little puppy lives.
And somehow, that’s exactly what guests fall in love with.
A New Beginning at the Retreat
A little while later, Oscar came to live with us at Puppy Yoga Retreat Zypern.
Like every new arrival, he wasn’t expected to do anything except be a puppy.
He slept.
He played.
He chased leaves across the garden.
He wrestled with his sisters.

He slowly discovered that people could be trusted.
Preparing for the Next Chapter
As the weeks passed, guests from all over the world met him during Puppy Yoga, Coffee, Cake & Cuddles and quiet afternoons in the garden.
Without realising it, every gentle interaction helped prepare him for the next chapter of his life.

Adoption Day
Then came the day we always work towards.
Adoption Day.
His new family travelled all the way to Cyprus to meet him.
Instead of sending him on a transport, they wanted to be there themselves.

They picked him up at Larnaca Airport.
It was the beginning of a completely new life.
Oscar’s Life Today
Today, Oscar lives exactly the kind of life we dream of for every rescue puppy.
He joins his family on adventures.
He even goes skiing.
He hikes.
He explores.

Most importantly, he adores the family’s children, and they adore him.
Looking at him today, it’s almost impossible to imagine that this confident, happy dog was once a tiny puppy left outside a shelter in a cardboard box.
But that’s exactly why we do what we do.
Every puppy sleeping peacefully on a yoga mat today has the potential to become someone’s greatest adventure tomorrow.
