A huge ship resting just off the coast, blue Mediterranean water, the wind in your hair and one of the loveliest sunsets around Peyia – the EDRO III Shipwreck in Cyprus is one of our favourite places for an easy evening by the sea.
We come here regularly, and for us the best way to experience EDRO III isn't simply to stop, take a photograph and leave.
The whole stretch of coastline is beautiful – and it's perfect for one of those uncomplicated evenings where you walk for a while, clear your head and let the sea do most of the entertaining.
Why EDRO III Is So Special
The first thing you notice when you see EDRO III in person is its size.
The ship sits surprisingly close to the coastline and looks almost surreal against the Mediterranean.
It ran aground here during severe weather in 2011 and has remained beside the coast ever since, gradually becoming one of the most recognisable sights around Paphos.
But it's especially towards the end of the day that we think EDRO III becomes really beautiful.
As the sun gets lower, the light reflects across the water and the enormous silhouette of the ship changes with the sky. There is something almost mystical about seeing it sitting quietly against the evening horizon.
Oniro by the Sea
Right beside the shipwreck is Oniro by the Sea, one of our favourite places to stop for a drink along this part of the coast.
From the terrace you have a beautiful view towards EDRO III and the Mediterranean, so it's an easy place to settle in for a cocktail, coffee or something to eat before or after the walk.
Later in the afternoon, the view becomes particularly special as the sunlight softens and the colours over the water begin to change.
You could easily come here just for Oniro and the shipwreck – but we usually like to continue along the coast.
A Beautiful Walk Along the Coast
From the EDRO III area, we walk along the coastline towards the Sea Caves.
At a relaxed pace, it takes us around 30 minutes to reach Sea Caves Restaurant.
It's an easy walk rather than a hike, and that's exactly what we like about it.
You have the sea beside you, the breeze coming off the water and a constantly changing view of the rocky coastline.
It's a wonderful place to clear your head.
You walk, feel the wind in your hair, look out across the Mediterranean and somehow realise that you've stopped thinking about whatever was occupying your mind half an hour earlier.
The Sea Caves
Along the way, the coastline becomes part of the experience itself.
This area is known for its Sea Caves, where the Mediterranean has shaped the pale limestone into caves, openings and small rocky bays.
From above, the contrast between the light-coloured cliffs and the blue and turquoise water is beautiful.
And because you're following the coast rather than walking towards one particular viewpoint, the scenery keeps changing as you go.
Sea Caves Restaurant at the Other End
After around half an hour, Sea Caves Restaurant gives the walk a natural destination.
That is one of the reasons we like this route so much.
You have Oniro and EDRO III at one end, another place to sit down for a drink or something to eat at the other, and a beautiful stretch of coastline connecting the two.
It can be a quick evening walk or you can take your time, stop along the way and turn it into a long, relaxed afternoon by the sea.
This Is Also Where We Walk With Our Rescue Puppies
This stretch of coastline is particularly special to us because it's also where we take our rescue puppies for our Puppy Beach Walks.
For the puppies, these outings are full of new experiences: the sound of the sea, unfamiliar surfaces, different smells, people and everything else happening outside their usual environment.
It's all part of the socialisation they experience while staying with us before moving on to their forever homes.
And for our guests, it's simply a lovely way to spend an evening.
Walking beside the Mediterranean as the sun begins to set is already beautiful. Doing it with a rescue puppy trotting beside you makes it even better.
Our Favourite Time to Visit
We love coming here towards the end of the afternoon.
The temperature becomes more comfortable, the light gets softer and the whole coastline feels calmer.
By sunset, EDRO III becomes an almost mysterious silhouette against the sea and sky.
It's the perfect ending to an easy walk – and a reminder that some of the nicest experiences in Cyprus don't need a full-day itinerary.
Sometimes half an hour beside the sea, a drink somewhere beautiful and a sunset are more than enough.
Is EDRO III Worth Visiting?
For us, absolutely.
The shipwreck itself is impressive, but it's the combination of everything around it that makes us return: Oniro overlooking the ship, the beautiful coastline, the Sea Caves, an easy walk beside the Mediterranean and that wonderful evening light.
It's simple, relaxed and one of our favourite ways to spend a few hours around Peyia.
