Paphos in January: Weather, Things to Do & What to Expect

Paphos Cyprus in January during the Mediterranean winter

Quieter, greener and cooler – January shows you a very different side of Paphos.

January in Paphos feels very different from the busy summer months.

It is quieter, greener and cooler. Some days are beautifully sunny; others bring rain, strong winds or proper winter storms.

But January also has something other months don’t: the feeling of a fresh start.

It is the first month of a new year – a time when many of us think about what we would like more of in our lives.

More movement.

Better food.

Less stress.

More time outside.

More time for ourselves.

If any of those are on your list, January in Cyprus might be a surprisingly good place to begin.

What Is the Weather Like in Paphos in January?

January is one of the coolest and wettest months of the year in Paphos.

Average daytime highs along the coast are around 16–17°C, while evenings and nights are considerably cooler. Rain is part of a Cyprus winter too, so you shouldn’t arrive expecting guaranteed blue skies every day.

But the weather can change quickly.

A grey morning can turn into a beautiful afternoon, and when the sun comes out, sitting outside in January can feel wonderful.

Compared with much of Europe, Paphos still gives you a good opportunity to get outside and feel some sun on your face in the middle of winter.

Think of January here as a mild Mediterranean winter rather than a winter beach holiday.

Does It Rain in Paphos in January?

Yes.

January can bring rain, wind and occasionally stormy weather. Some days simply aren’t made for outdoor plans.

The best approach is to stay flexible.

If the forecast gives you a beautiful Tuesday, make that your hiking or exploring day rather than saving it for Thursday because that’s what your itinerary says.

Is January a Good Time for Walking and Hiking?

On the right day, absolutely.

One advantage of winter is that you don’t have the intense summer heat. Longer walks and hikes can be much more comfortable, and the landscape is often greener than visitors expect from Cyprus.

You could explore the Akamas Peninsula and trails such as the Adonis Trail, or choose something easier like a coastal walk around Sea Caves and the Edro III shipwreck.

January isn’t about planning every outdoor activity weeks in advance. Watch the weather and make the most of the good days.

Can You Swim in Paphos in January?

Technically? Yes.

Would everyone want to? Definitely not.

The Mediterranean is much cooler than during the main swimming season. Cyprus tourism information puts winter sea temperatures at roughly 16–17°C, so you may spot determined swimmers, but I wouldn’t plan a January holiday around long days in the water.

If swimming and sunbathing are your priority, choose a warmer month.

What Should You Pack for Paphos in January?

Warmer clothes than you might expect.

Seeing “Cyprus” on your boarding pass can make it tempting to pack for summer.

Don’t.

Layers work best because a sunny afternoon and a January evening can feel like two completely different seasons.

Bring long trousers, warm jumpers, a jacket and something suitable for rain and wind. Good shoes are useful if you plan to walk or hike.

And one slightly less glamorous recommendation:

Bring warm pyjamas.

Cypriot houses can feel surprisingly cool during winter, particularly at night.

Even after a lovely afternoon outside, you may be very happy that you didn’t bring only your light summer sleepwear.

Is Paphos Busy in January?

January is much quieter than the main holiday season.

If you’re looking for packed beach bars and a lively summer-resort atmosphere, this isn’t the month I would choose.

But the quieter pace has its advantages. Archaeological sites, coastal areas and popular places around Paphos can feel completely different without the summer crowds.

Some seasonal businesses may close or reduce their opening hours during winter, so check before making a special journey.

January: A Different Kind of Fresh Start

January comes with a strange amount of pressure.

New year. New goals. New routines.

Exercise more.

Eat better.

Relax more.

Spend less time staring at your phone.

And a couple of weeks later, everyday life has usually taken over again.

I prefer the idea of actually making some space for those things.

Morning yoga instead of promising yourself you’ll start next Monday.

Fresh vegetarian meals instead of another complicated diet.

Time outside instead of another afternoon indoors.

And a chance to slow down rather than trying to squeeze relaxation into an already full schedule.

In our case, there are also quite a lot of puppy cuddles involved.

January at Our Puppy Yoga Retreat in Cyprus

January at our retreat is different from summer – and that’s part of its charm.

Our days combine yoga, vegetarian food, time to relax and life with our foster puppies.

Morning yoga.

Fresh vegetarian food.

Time outside.

Time to slow down.

And plenty of puppy cuddles.

When the weather is beautiful, there is the Paphos region to explore.

When it isn’t, the pace becomes slower.

And sometimes slowing down is exactly what a retreat is supposed to be about.

The puppies, incidentally, don’t particularly care whether your New Year’s resolution was to practise more yoga.

They may, however, make sticking to it considerably more entertaining.

Is Paphos Worth Visiting in January?

Yes – for the right kind of traveller.

Come if you want a break from a colder European winter, a quieter side of Cyprus and the flexibility to enjoy nature when the weather is on your side.

Don’t come expecting guaranteed summer temperatures.

Bring layers. Bring warm pyjamas. Leave some flexibility in your plans.

And perhaps bring one intention for the new year with you.

More yoga.

Better food.

More movement.

Less rushing.

January doesn’t have to be about completely reinventing yourself.

Sometimes, starting the year somewhere different is enough.
