If you're thinking about visiting Paphos in December, you're probably not looking for a traditional summer holiday.
And that's exactly where December has its charm.
There can be beautifully sunny days that are perfect for hiking, coastal walks and lunch outside. Then there are days when the wind picks up, rain moves across the island and staying somewhere cosy with a good book suddenly feels like the best plan imaginable.
December in Paphos has both.
And towards the end of the month, there's another reason to come: the possibility of spending Christmas or New Year's Eve somewhere completely different – with yoga, Mediterranean views and rescue puppies.
How Warm Is Paphos in December?
Average daytime highs in Paphos are around 20°C, while nighttime temperatures are approximately 11°C.
As always, averages don't tell the whole story.
On a clear December afternoon, sitting outside in the sunshine can feel wonderfully pleasant. There are days when a T-shirt is completely comfortable in the sun, particularly when there isn't much wind.
Once the sun disappears, however, it feels much more like winter.
Here in Peyia we're slightly elevated and often have a breeze, so evenings can become noticeably chilly. A jumper and jacket are definitely part of December life.
This is a month for layers rather than a suitcase filled only with summer clothes.
Does It Rain a Lot in Paphos in December?
December is one of the wetter months of the year in Paphos, with roughly 10–11 days of measurable rain on average.
That doesn't mean ten entire days of continuous rain.
Cyprus winter weather can change quickly. You may have several sunny days followed by an afternoon of showers, strong wind or occasionally a proper Mediterranean storm.
If you're coming purely for guaranteed sunshine, December isn't the safest month to choose.
But for a trip where yoga, walking, reading, relaxing and exploring are all part of the experience, a little weather variation doesn't have to be a problem.
Sometimes it simply changes the plan for the day.
Can You Swim in Paphos in December?
You can – although whether you'll actually want to depends on how brave you are.
The sea around Paphos is usually around 19–20°C in December.
You'll still see people swimming, particularly on sunny days, but for most visitors December isn't really a swimming-holiday month.
I'd see a December swim as a bonus rather than something to build the whole trip around.
The coastline itself, however, remains one of the best places to spend a sunny winter afternoon.
Sunny December Days Are Made for Walking
One of the nicest things about December is how comfortable outdoor activities can be when the weather is good.
A sunny day around 18–20°C is lovely for walking and hiking.
You can spend several hours outside without needing to plan your route around the warmest part of the day.
The Adonis Trail in Akamas is a beautiful option if you'd like a proper hike through Mediterranean landscapes.
For something much more relaxed, we love walking along the coast around the EDRO III Shipwreck and Sea Caves .
The days are shorter in December, but that also means sunset arrives early enough to combine a walk with the beautiful evening light without staying out late.
And because December is outside the main tourist season, many places around Paphos feel considerably quieter.
The coastline has a completely different atmosphere when there's more space around you.
When the Weather Turns, Slow Down
Then there are the other December days.
The wind blows.
Rain hits the windows.
The sea suddenly looks much wilder than the calm turquoise Mediterranean you see in summer photographs.
And perhaps that's the day when you don't need another excursion.
Bring a good book.
Make some tea.
Journal.
Rest.
Think.
December naturally lends itself to reflection because we're already approaching the end of the year.
What happened during the last twelve months?
What do you want more of?
What are you ready to leave behind?
What would you like the next year to feel like?
Being away from your normal routines can give you a surprising amount of space to think about those questions.
A stormy afternoon doesn't necessarily feel like a lost holiday day when you have nowhere you need to be.
Sometimes that's exactly the point.
December gives you two kinds of days: the ones that invite you outside – and the ones that invite you to turn inward.
A Different Kind of Christmas – With Puppies
Christmas is supposed to be a time of warmth, love and togetherness.
But not everyone's Christmas looks like that.
Some people live far away from the people they love. Some spend Christmas alone. Others simply want to step away from the expectations and traditions that can make December feel more stressful than peaceful.
And perhaps Christmas doesn't always have to look the way we've been taught it should.
Maybe it can also be about choosing where you want to put your love.
Bei our retreat, that might mean starting Christmas morning with yoga, sharing food with new people and spending part of the day with our rescue puppies.
The puppies don't know that it's Christmas.
They don't understand presents, traditions or the date on the calendar.
But they understand kindness.
They understand a gentle hand, play, attention and affection.
And there is something very special about spending a day that's supposed to be about love by giving some of that love back to small beings who genuinely appreciate every bit of attention they receive.
Maybe a puppy climbs into your lap.
Maybe a shy one chooses to come a little closer.
Maybe you spend far too long throwing the same toy because apparently that's all that's required for an excellent Christmas Day.
The puppies don't care whether you arrived alone.
They don't care what your family situation looks like.
They're simply happy that you're there.
It may not be a traditional Christmas.
But yoga in the morning, good food, Mediterranean views, new people around the table and a group of rescue puppies sounds like a pretty special one.
What About New Year's Eve?
New Year's Eve can have a similar feeling.
It doesn't have to mean a huge party or a crowded nightclub.
The last few days of December can be a beautiful opportunity to look back at the year and decide what you want to take into the next one.
Yoga, journaling, good food, the Mediterranean and plenty of puppy company make for a rather different way to finish the year.
And waking up in Cyprus on January 1st feeling rested isn't a bad beginning either.
What Should You Pack for Paphos in December?
December requires layers and a little flexibility.
One thing that's easy to underestimate is how cool it can feel indoors.
Many apartments, holiday rentals and Airbnbs in Cyprus aren't insulated or heated in the same way you may be used to in countries such as Germany.
Even when the daytime temperature outside is mild, rooms can feel surprisingly cool in the evening or early morning – particularly after a rainy or windy day.
So don't only pack for the weather outside.
I'd bring:
- T-shirts for sunny afternoons
- long-sleeved tops
- leggings or comfortable trousers
- yoga and activewear
- trainers or hiking shoes
- warm socks
- a warm jumper or sweatshirt
- a jacket
- a rain jacket
- comfortable warm clothes for evenings indoors
- swimwear if you'd like to brave the sea
- sunglasses and sunscreen
And if you're staying in a holiday apartment, a cosy blanket can suddenly feel like a very good idea.
There's something quite lovely about a stormy Cyprus evening when you're wrapped up with a blanket, a cup of tea and a good book while the wind is blowing outside.
Which brings us to two more things I'd pack in December:
a good book and a journal.
There's a reasonable chance you'll be very glad you brought both.
Is Paphos Worth Visiting in December?
Yes – but for different reasons than in summer.
Come for mild winter sunshine rather than heat.
Come for hiking and coastal walks rather than endless pool days.
Come for quieter surroundings, yoga and the opportunity to slow down.
On beautiful days, you go outside and explore.
When Cyprus gives you wind and rain instead, you stay in, read, journal, practise yoga or simply take some time for yourself.
And if you're looking for a Christmas or New Year's Eve that's a little less traditional, spending the final days of the year with Mediterranean views, new people and rescue puppies can turn December into something genuinely memorable.

Spend December Somewhere Different
Start your days with yoga, enjoy sunny winter walks when the weather is beautiful and slow down with good food, quiet moments and our rescue puppies when it's time to stay in.
